Inspiring Song Essay
Our Inspiring Song essay was one of the first writing assignments this semester. In it we chose a song, and wrote about how it inspired us. I did mine on the song "My Hero" by the Foo Fighters. I decided to take a more scientific approach, and went with what makes someone a hero. We spent an immense amount of time on this in class, and the final products were overall pretty decent.

I was really happy with the final product of this essay. I spent an immense amount of time and energy on it and it shows. I went through several ideas and completely different topics before I settled on this final thesis. The song was one that did not have an easy way to go from it, and I stuck with it and had a much different and unique essay compared to what some of the others had. In the end I am very proud of this essay and its quality.
Snapshot Comic Strip Commentary
Our Snapshot Comic Strip Commentary was the writing piece to accompany the Snapshot Comic Strip described in the Projects section. It is the first in the series of IR assignments I will be talking about. For this I read Unbroken by Laura Hillenbrand. I describe the scene in the writing piece, and describe why I drew the comic strip the way that I did. I also give some back story so the reader can understand what is happening.

I honestly feel like I got a little lazy on this one. The middle paragraph is short and lackluster, and doesn't do what it what it was supposed to for the essay. It feels like filler for the essay or a bridge between the first and third paragraphs. I did use great vocabulary though and I kept a strong tone though the whole essay, so that is a plus. I still got a good grade, but I could have done better.
Letter to the Author
This is the next in the line of IR assignments. Unlike the others, this one did not have an accompanying art piece/project and is just a writing piece. I read the book The Eye of Zoltar by Jasper Fforde for this one. For the essay we had to write a letter to the author of the novel, and explain certain things regarding our experience with the book. This included explaining a lot of things we liked and related to in the book.
Here is My Letter to the Author.
This assignment really frustrated me. This book is very complex, as it has several intricate subplots, going alongside an unimaginable setting, as well as being the third book in the series and relying heavily on the two previous, specifically the first. This made a lot of the subject matter I was talking about very confusing to someone who had not read the books. For these reasons I did rather poorly on this assignment despite my effort.
Movie Poster/Proposal
This is the third out of the four IR assignments. For this one, we chose a book that had not yet been turned into a movie, and we proposed how we would make it. We had to explain where we would shoot the movie, the cast we would choose for the movie, etc. I used the book Leviathan by Scott Westerfield for this one because it had not been turned into a movie yet and would make a good movie.
Here is my Movie Proposal.
This was one of my favorite writhing pieces for the year. I really enjoyed thinking about who I would choose to cast for each character and where to shoot the movie. It took me a really long time to come up with the cast, but it was worth it. I also enjoyed arguing why the book would make a good movie. This was an amazing book to start and it was fun thinking how it would turn out as a movie.
Character Portrait
This is the last of the IR writing assignments. On this assignment, we chose a character from the book and drew a portrait of them. We then described the character, and told how and why we drew them this way in the portrait. I did mine on Leo Valdez from The Blood of Olympus by Rick Riordan, because I related to him and he was my favorite character.

I had fun while writing his one. Part of it was to be creative about anything that was not known about the character, so I went with it. Leo Valdez likely does not have a crippling fear of old ladies, but he does according to my essay. Overall, I was very proud of this essay and the tone I was able to keep consistent through the essay, being humorously informative.
